Why is there a need for machine learning?

Machine learning is needed for carrying out tasks that prove to be too complicated for humans to code directly. In such a case, a large amount of data is provided to the machine algorithm, and this algorithm works it out by exploring the data provided searching for a model that can achieve what the programmer wishes to.
